At the outset, it is worth noting that both long-term lack of sleep and its regular deficiency have serious health consequences. No wonder that already in 1997, the monitoring of this record in the “Guinness Book of Records” ceased. Nevertheless, before this happened, several people managed to set remarkable results.

Who owns the Guinness record for sleeping? No one was given an official title
Although many people declare themselves to be lovers of sleeping, the actual time they spend on this activity is difficult to measure. For this, the official title of record holder in this regard has never been awarded. But that doesn’t mean people haven’t tried. In 2017, a seven-year-old boy from Kentucky fell asleep for 11 days. The tests that the doctors conducted did not bring any explanation. In 1959, a British man went into a state of hypnosis for eight days, but despite the media hype, this feat was not counted as sleeping. However, there was no shortage of people who decided to set the opposite record – without sleeping.
This man did not sleep a wink for almost 19 days. He broke all previous records
The last record holder to enter the book as the person who stayed awake the longest was Robert McDonald. In 1986, a man did not sleep for 453 hours and 40 minutes, which gave a total of 18 days 21 hours and 40 minutes. Although he had many other risky achievements to his credit, that lack of sleep was the most dangerous thing he’d ever done in his life. At that time, he faced many ailments that subsided over time. Before him, many other people set the record, but one seventeen-year-old deserves special attention.
Teenage experiment and record. It shows what sleep deprivation entails
In 1964, Randy Gardner conducted an experiment in which he did not sleep for more than 264 hours. During the last three days, he was accompanied by Professor William Dement from Stanford University, on which he reported. We can learn from it what effect lack of sleep had on the body. Randy first began to have trouble concentrating, then his sense of taste and smell developed, and at one point he experienced visual hallucinations and even delusions. In his later years he suffered from insomnia, but it is not known whether the experiment had a direct effect on this.
Although please note that regular deficiency is unhealthy and leads to many unpleasant ailments. Among them are e.g. increased risk of cancer, reduced immunity, problems with maintaining a healthy weight, not to mention problems with concentration and constant fatigue.
