When to plant onions? The term depends on two things
The date of planting depends not only on the way you want to do it (from seeds, seedlings or bulbs), but above all on the temperature. It is important that it is not lower than 5 degrees, because otherwise the yield may not be much. If it’s warm enough it is best to start sowing from seeds in April, and planting seedlings after two months from its establishment, i.e. around the beginning, in the first half of May. As for planting spring onions, you can start as early as April.
How to plant onions to grow healthy? It depends on one factor
The ways of planting onions differ primarily from how we want to do it. In case of Before sowing seeds, start with proper soil preparation. Dig it, remove all weeds and stones, loosen it (e.g. with a rake), and finally level it thoroughly. Then prepare the beds at a distance of 20 cm, and in each of them make holes every 1 cm and 3 cm deep. Put one seed in each, bury it with soil and water it. After less than two months, pull out the least developed seedlings, so that the distance between the remaining ones is not less than 5 cm.
- Planting from seedlings. When the seedlings have a few leaves (approx. 2 months after sowing into pots), move them to the garden. As above, prepare rows every 20 cm and plant the seedlings in holes spaced approx. 10 cm apart. It is important to plant it so that more than half of the plant is in the ground and a small part above it.
- Planting spring onions. Here, too, prepare the soil properly and the rows every 20 cm. The distance between the plants should be about 15 cm. Plant them as deep as possible only the top of the onion was sticking out a bit. Cover the remaining part thoroughly, knead and water regularly.
