Anna Kowal (): Do you have little princesses and little princes at home, fans of Disney fairy tales? Or maybe you yourself remember them with sentiment? The latest volume of the collection of Disney stories in comic versions has just hit bookstores – “Alice in Wonderland” (Egmont). I will not summarize the story, because it is a shame not to know, and in addition, in this crazy plot I could easily make a mistake and then I would be ashamed. The series also includes: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “The Lion King”, “Mulan”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “Aladdin” and “Alice in Wonderland”. Do you think comics are a good way to encourage your child to read? In my opinion yes – a lot of nice, colorful pictures, less text, but still containing a specific story … – it should work!
For the young reader
Richard Kozik (): “Emotions. The Badgers and Foxes family presents. Volume 1” by Brigitte Luciani and Eve Tharlet is an invitation to the forest school of Mr Badger and Mrs Lisica. Mrs. Lisica will talk to us about the most important emotions that appear in our lives. It’s great, because the animals have many interesting stories to tell about it. Teacher Matylda will tell you in a fun and accessible way what emotions rule us most often, and most importantly – she will explain why they are used and suggest how we can deal with them.
Marta Korycka (): My younger son met badgers in “Mr. Badger and Mrs. Fox. Meeting” by these authors. The older one reads, for example, in successive volumes of Lucky Luke, “Donald Ducks”. “Asteriksach” or “Kajkach i Kokoszach”, but recently I also dropped him on the shelf “almost a comic book” by Boguś Janiszewski and Nikola Kucharska “Dust. Where did the dream go?” from the publishing house Agora for children. Janiszewski is not afraid to explain to children what many consider “difficult” – he has already touched on topics such as cancer in the wise “O, Sickness” or economics or sex in the series “What Adults Don’t Tell You”. Now, together with illustrator Nikola Kucharska, they take readers on a journey inside the body. The book combines elements of the comic and longer parts of the text.
Anna: Foxgames, which has been publishing paragraph comics for several years, has prepared a series for children 6+, which is a great opportunity for parents and children to have fun together. The stories have been designed especially for the youngest and contain simplified adventures. Extensive scenarios will allow children to learn to read and have fun, but also develop imagination and logical thinking. The series included comic book “Sugar. Cats and Dragons”. The cat kingdom is in turmoil: a terrible dragon is terrorizing it! The brave kitten Mo decides to go in search of the monster, despite the prohibition of his father, the king. Fortunately, he can count on the help of little readers. In the comic Cats & Dragons: Dragon Blossoms, Mo the kitten wants to give her mom a special birthday gift: dragon flowers. They grow in the distant mountains, where the dragon and unknown creatures live … “Stork Lucek” also appeared in the series. The title character is not an ordinary postal worker, but an adventurous postman! His friends from the village entrust him with important tasks, and we, playing him, have to complete them.
Ryszard: The hero of Tomasz Niewiadomski’s comic book “Cat Dreams” (published by Kurs) is the cat Bear who dreams of Sherlock Holmes, Newton, lost dried catnip, travels, mice and once again about food. The author imagined what a cat might dream of, treating him as a co-author of the script. The absurd and grotesque sense of humor will amuse not only cat lovers.
Anna: “Devils. No Sisters” (Egmont) is the third in Olivier Dutto’s series about not very polite siblings. Devils are in great shape for making jokes! The sister and her younger brother, known by the extended family as “the two wild beasts”, are constantly fighting with each other. Usually the smarter Nina wins, because she has plenty of ideas how to make her parents punish Tom for things he didn’t do. But even she can prove helpless in the confrontation with cousin Frank… And how will the siblings cope when their mother goes away for a few days and stay with their father, who does not like cooking and cleaning?
Richard: “Duckburg. A parrot from Singapore and other stories from 1945-1946” Carl Barks (Egmont) is the 19th volume in the series. The bird from the titular story is named Joe, and in its beak it has a sticky tongue, which is particularly annoying for Donald. In turn, in the comic book “The Wise Dog”, the drakes decide to take in a shaggy quadruped. Donald insists that the animal must have a pedigree and belong to the most intelligent breed in the world … There are more animals in this collection. In one story, the nephews befriend a baby seal, and in another, Donald tries to get a turkey to keep a Thanksgiving tradition. The longest comic in the volume, “The Scare of the River”, is about a certain water monster.
Comics for older kids
Anna: And now something for older, maybe even adult children… “Mercenary” Vicente Segrelles (Kurc) is the ninth book in the Lost Ancestors series. Nan-Tay and the Mercenary embark on an exhausting search for a warrior’s ancestors. They set off from Spain of the Reconquista era to the ocean, to the kingdom of the Mayans. The mercenary will meet someone he never expected to see again…
Richard: “Buddy Longway” is the third part of the “Human Madness” series by Deriba (Kurc). It is a love story set in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, the story of the Longways: Buddy, Chinook, Jeremy and Kathleen. The family first faces nature, sometimes hostile but character-forming, and then the Indians, who bring with them violence and injustice.
Anna: “Sherlock Holmes: Mystical Investigations” (FoxGames) is a paragraph comic aimed at older readers. Strange crimes have been committed in London. Finding the perpetrators is a real challenge. Are not of this world really the culprits? Readers/players can play as Holmes, Watson or Thomas Carnacki (hunter of all wonders). They question witnesses, look for clues and try to unravel the mystery.
Richard: “Dawn of X. X-Men” (Egmont) is the first volume of the main X-Men adventure series under the banner “Dawn of X”. An independent state on the island of Krakoa flourished, and the mutants regained hope for a better tomorrow. Thanks to their own courage and extremely advanced biotechnology, they have become serious players on the international arena, but the more influence they gain, the more powerful their opponents. This volume is written by Jonathan Hickman, with art by Leinil Francis Yu and Russell Dauterman.
Anna: The Great Collection of DC Comics Heroes and Villains is published by Hachette Polska. This is a collection of comics with the most popular heroes of the DC Universe. Each issue is a unique, immersive adventure with iconic characters – from Batman to Aquaman, from the Joker to Suicide Squad. The latest, 45th volume is “Birds of Prey. Great minds think alike”.
Ryszard: As a child, I read comics, but I must admit that I always preferred books. Reaching now “Batman Detective Comics – New Neighborhood” (Egmont) so after many years I jumped into deep water, but I surfaced and I must admit that I liked it, so the sequels will follow. Batman leaves the Wayne Manor and the Bat Cave. He moves into a townhouse in the heart of the city and builds new microcaves in the sewer tunnels beneath Gotham’s surface. New mayor Christopher Nakano, however, has his own ideas for keeping the city safe, and he’s at odds with the Dark Knight. Gotham is shaken by the murder of Sarah Worth, the daughter of the powerful and ruthless Roland Worth. Batman was seen at the crime scene, and he was the first to find the body, so suspicion falls on him. So the hunt for the batman begins, and in the meantime the real criminal has very cleverly camouflaged himself…
