Let us remember, however, that playing with a stick can end tragically, as in the case of a dog that fetched a stick and caught it on a tree on its way back. A stick held in the dog’s mouth twisted and pierced the windpipe, leading to the animal’s death. Veterinary technician Adrianna Iwan in an interview with the “” portal points out that sticks are not good toys for quadrupeds. “The stick can stick into the ground and if the dog doesn’t stop and falls over it, it can pierce the larynx or chest,” he explains. In addition, bitten sticks have sharp edges that can slash teeth, gums and palate, and shards can stay in the stomach or damage the digestive tract, pierce the intestine or esophagus. It may also lead to choking on a stick or its fragment, which leads to breathing disorders in the dog and, consequently, to death. “The sticks aren’t the only problem. We should also mention stones and chestnuts. These are the three most popular “toys” thrown to dogs, the expert adds.
