If you want to take advantage of spa treatment abroad, i.e. within the so-called cross-border directive, you must submit a referral issued by a health insurance doctor to the Health Fund. It will then be assessed by a doctor employed by the Fund. It will be a specialist in the field of balneology and physical medicine or medical rehabilitation, whose task is to check them in terms of the advisability of treatment.

Spa treatment abroad. Which sanatorium to choose?
Patient who receives a positive response to his referral (including registration number, medical assessment result and expected waiting time) it can be carried out in a sanatorium located abroad. The condition is to choose a country of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). After that, everything proceeds in the same way as in the case of continuing treatment at a spa in the country. As we can read on this means that:
- the selected town must be recognized as a health resort in a given EU/EFTA country and provide treatment using natural medicinal resources,
- the number of treatments that the patient will receive in a health resort in another country must be the same as in Poland. This is due to the scope of spa treatment indicated by a specialist doctor.
What is important, the decision to choose a specific location outside the country is an independent decision of the patient. This means that the patient chooses the foreign spa himself.
Have you decided on a sanatorium abroad? Inform the Fund
If you decide to undergo spa treatment under the Cross-border Directive, you are obliged to inform the Fund branch thereof in writing. important to do it before the specified waiting time, after which you will be directed to a sanatorium in Poland. Remember to ask for the original referral in the letter with information about the choice of a foreign one, which then needs to be translated.
You have to pay for treatment first. You will get your refund later
After receiving the necessary documents and then consent, you can go for treatment abroad. Don’t forget, however, that at the beginning you cover all costs, which are reimbursed by the National Health Fund after returning to Poland. Pursuant to the regulations, the basis for reimbursement is the weighted average amount of financing, which is calculated for benefits as of 1 January. What is important, before you make a decision, you can apply to the Fund to determine the amount of the expected return. When you return from treatment, you must submit a claim for reimbursement no later than 6 months from the date on which the invoice was issued. It must be accompanied by documentation regarding the treatment received (e.g. schedule, procedures that were performed, etc.).
