The Menendez brothers murdered their parents. After their deaths, they spent several hundred thousand dollars

On the evening of August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik entered the family estate. They held shotguns in their hands. Jose’s father was shot six times, one fatally, in the back of the head. Kitty’s mother was shot a total of 10 times by the brothers. Before receiving the last fatal shot, she was crawling on the ground.

The shots alerted neighbors who called the police. Lyle and Erik already had their story lined up: they were at the movie theater where they had seen Batman, and after the screening they went to the festival. Initially, investigators focused their attention on looking for suspects outside the family. Enemies of Jose Menendez were sought, mafia scores were bet. The brothers were not in the circle of suspicion, so they focused on a lavish life. They bought more properties, luxury watches and cars, and spent their holidays in the Caribbean. They spent several hundred thousand dollars in a year, although, as the members of the Menendez family pointed out, the brothers’ profligacy after the death of their parents was not much different from what they spent during Jose and Kitty’s lifetime.

Lyle and Erik Menendez. They were arrested when the younger brother told a psychologist about the murder

Lyle was 21 at the time of his parents’ murder, Erik was 19. Although their behavior after their parents’ deaths eventually made investigators suspicious, evidence was lacking. In the end, Erik confessed to the murder to a psychologist who told his then-partner about everything. After the breakup, the woman contacted the police.

Jerome Oziel, a psychologist who had been helping Erik for a long time, recorded the meetings with his permission (and to the knowledge of Jose Menendez, who controlled his sons for years). So the police had a confession tape, but it caused a lot of trouble in court. Ultimately, it was decided not to admit it as evidence. Both materials provided by Oziel and recordings made during Kitty Menendez’s psychological sessions were shown in the courtroom. The woman was supposed to be afraid of her sons.

The case became a media sensation. Now Netflix will talk about it

The trial dragged on for years, and parts of it were broadcast on television. During court hearings, the brothers told their version of events. Jose Menendez was to rule the house with an iron fist. The brothers claimed that they had been abused all their lives by both their father and mother. Additionally, Jose allegedly molested them. Ultimately, brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life without parole.

So far, no details are known about the series, and in particular its cast. It is known that the production is to hit the platform in 2024, and the creators of the miniseries “Dahmer – The Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer” are responsible for it.
