Anni-Frid Lyngstad was born in 1945 in Ballangen, Norway. She is the daughter of Norwegian Synni Lyngstad and Alfred Hasse, a German Wehrmacht non-commissioned officer stationed in Norway. She was conceived as part of a Nazi experiment that forced her to flee the country after the war ended. She was brought up by her grandmother, as her mother died two years after she was born. For many years she believed that her father had died on a ship bound for Germany, but in 1977 it turned out that Alfred Hasse was alive.

In 1962, she married Ragnar Fredriksson, with whom she has two children, but divorced four years later.
