they know that the female audience is the most enthusiastic at their concerts and is responsible for the fact that, in more than one Hispanic household, Their songs have been passed down from generation to generation: from mothers to daughters, from aunts to nieces, from grandmothers to granddaughters.
So the brothers Lucía and Joaquín Galán (better known as Pimpinela) they have prepared a very intimate celebration for Ecuadorian mothers in their month in exchange for guiding them for decades. The duo will perform this Thursday May 4 at the Guayaquil Convention Center, starting at 8 p.m
“The female audience, since we started 40 years ago, especially in the 1980s, the stories were much more focused on Hispanic and Latina women going through a complex situation, in terms of other work, social, cultural, marital situations, play a more submissive role, although not all of course ”, Lucía Galán recalled via Zoom for this newspaper. “And the character Joaquín created for me for the songs was the opposite, She was the woman who stood up and put an end to all these troubles that seemed unfair to her ”.
As a special gift to the public of the Pearl of the Pacific, During the concert, Pimpinela will perform the theme live for the first time I cry, his latest single released worldwide last Friday, April 28, which is the continuation of the plot of When I see him.
This newspaper spoke to the brothers about their next visit to Guayaquil and about satisfaction 40 years of musical trajectory.
What anecdotes or feelings do you keep for our country?
Joaquin: What amazes us most about the Ecuadorian public is how they remember the songs, the loyalty, the participation and how romantic Ecuadorian women are. I can’t tell you a specific anecdote, but I can tell you that in every country we feel certain qualities and in Ecuador there is that special romance of women and that loyalty for which, despite so much time, they stay with us.
Since it is a concert for Mother’s Day, the interpretation of the theme becomes more relevant You will always live in me (dedicated to his mother), what can you say?
Joaquin: They are songs that you make just by writing down what you feel. There you don’t have to invent or invent or plan anything. You will always live in me It is a tribute to our mother, who passed away on January 12, 2020, who was also our duo mentor, the one who discovered in us, with her gaze and with love, the vocation we had and who encouraged us to work together. to sing . So it’s a song that means a lot, sometimes live these songs are difficult because the emotion has to be balanced, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to sing it, but it’s going to be very exciting to sing it for the mothers in Ecuador.
And what will it be about? I cry?
Lucia: There was a song called last year When I see him, which is a love story of an adult woman with a man 20 years younger and especially what it entails in terms of social prejudices, personal fears, doubts, questions (…). But this woman allows herself to have this relationship and I cry is the continuation of this love story, which seems like a kind of miniseries of two episodes.
The theatrical part of your concerts is the spark that ignites your performances. Did this come naturally to you?
Joaquin: That was a result of our calling. Mine for composing and Lucía for the theatre. But when we started singing together, by chance and without intention, we discovered these dialogued and dramatized songs, to play a little with the songs I was composing that Lucía interpreted with gestures and gestures. There we realized that we had something that identified us and that amused us at the same time.
Have you ever thought of going in other directions?
Lucia: I think the brother-sister relationship is the most important, which we prioritize over the professional one. We both have the same vocation, the same passion for our work, for what we do, we still enjoy it and it captivates us like the first day. That contact with people, the tours, so everything stays the same. Then comes learning to cope, it’s learning to accept each other’s differences, learning that we may grow personally in different ways, but what unites us, most importantly, is family.
