The debut of cellist Pablo Ferrández and the return of violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Grigory Sokolov will mark the 84th San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, which will also include the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra among the outstanding names.

The San Sebastian festival has advanced this Tuesday part of the program of its next edition, which will be held from August 3 to September 1 and which adds more than 70 concerts in its different stages, in which there will also be room for dance with a “avant-garde” production of “Swan Lake”, by Tchaikovsky, by the company of the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj.

A new semi-staged and self-produced version of Stravinsky’s opera-oratorio “Oedipus Rex” will also be presented.

This year Mahler’s Symphony number 8 is also part of the poster, which, as eighteen years ago, will once again bring together more than 400 people on stage.

The cycle of great concerts in the Kursaal auditorium will be inaugurated on August 3 by the Rotterdam Philharmonic under the baton of its new and young chief conductor, Lahav Shani, and with the intervention of Pablo Ferrández.

The following day, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra will return to the Kursaal with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

The Preljocaj company will present “Swan Lake” on August 7, with which the French choreographer will offer “his most personal vision of the myth of the swan-princess,” says the Fortnight in a note.

On the 16th, Grigory Sokolov will offer a recital with baroque works by Purcell and also by Mozart, while Mitsuko Uchida will return on the 20th with a monographic program by Schubert for four hands that she will perform together with Jonathan Biss.

Before that, on August 18, Mahler’s Symphony number 8 will bring together the Euskadiko Orkestra and the Navarra Symphony Orchestra on the Kursaal stage together with Orfeón Donostiarra, Orfeón Pamplonés, Easo Eskolania and Easo Gazte Abesbatza.

In the final stretch of the festival, on August 26, Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform with her chamber ensemble, Mutter’s Virtuosi, and the Kursaal cycle will close with Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen on August 29 and September 1, the first of them with violinist Hilary Hahn as guest soloist.

The Victoria Eugenia theater will host a single performance this time, that of the Euskal Barrokensemble, entitled “El amor brujo: esencias de la música de Manuel de Falla”.
