Employees testified that they did not notice anything disturbing in her behavior. She also met her friend, with whom she parted at 2 pm. That was the last time she was seen.

According to another rumor, Dorothy had an unwanted pregnancy and died during an abortion, and her body was burned. This was believed, the more so that in 1916 an illegal clinic was discovered that carried out this type of operation, in which women were dying. That same year, a convicted inmate allegedly testified that he had been paid to bury the body of a young woman who was supposed to be Dorothy. The principal was to be her beloved George. Over the years, there have been many other rumors and reports without coverage in reality.
Her mother believed she would come back. To this day, the mystery of Dorothy’s disappearance has not been solved
Francis Arnold died in 1922. He did not include his daughter in his will because he was sure she was dead. His wife was of a different opinion, believing until the very end that Dorothy had simply run away and would return soon. After her death, a lawyer friend was to say that most likely the girl took her own life because of a failed writing career. Despite numerous guesses and speculations, to this day it is not known exactly what happened to her.
