Jerzy and Barbara Stuhr have been married for 52 years. Although they have known each other since kindergarten, it was not love at first sight. After primary school, their paths diverged, but they met again at university. They’ve been inseparable ever since.

When Jerzy Stuhr and Barbara Kóska were 5 years old, they attended the same kindergarten in Bielsko-Biała. They were supposed to dance the krakowiak together, but Jerzy trampled on Basia’s feet, which made her dislike him. Their paths parted in high school, when Stuhr chose a general high school and Kóska chose a music school. They only met during religion classes in the parish hall. Fate brought them back together in Kraków, where they both went to study.

Jerzy studied Polish studies at the Jagiellonian University, and Barbara enrolled at the Academy of Music. In the meantime, Stuhr was already playing at the STU Theatre, but Kóska dreamed of becoming a violinist. When they met on the university stairs, something sparked.

– Barbara. When Stuhr began to achieve professional success, they grew apart. His wife then wrote him a letter in which she told him about her feelings and asked him to consider what was more important to him: his career.

The actor managed to reconcile his private and professional life and in 1975 the couple welcomed their son Maciej into the world. In 1982, their daughter Marianna was born. – I associate love most with a huge longing for my wife and children – said Stuhr. Six years later, fate put their relationship to another test.

In 1988, Jerzy suffered a heart attack. He recovered, but in 2011 he was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. – There was a moment when a line was drawn on Jerzy. The doctors just wrote him off. He was in such a catastrophic condition that the head of one of Krakow’s hospitals did not want to admit him. He was afraid that Stuhr would die at night in the ward and a scandal would spread throughout Poland, Barbara said. In February 2016, the actor suffered a second heart attack. Four years later he suffered a stroke. She was with him all the time. “I will not leave you until death.” Suddenly I realized it was true. This is Love. For better or for worse, said Stuhr.
