Dalida was successful for many years, becoming world famous. Over 170 million albums sold or the first ever diamond status for the singer are just two of her many achievements. Unfortunately, private life was a series of failures and personal tragedies. Unable to find happiness, she committed suicide at the age of 54.
She was a star, but she wasn’t happy. She has struggled with guilt since childhood
Although as an adult Dalida was considered the ideal of beauty, in her childhood she was often ridiculed for her appearance. The most common reason for mockery from her peers was glasses with thick lenses, which she had to wear due to a serious vision defect. Family problems also left a significant mark on her life. The father of the future star abused alcohol, under the influence of which he became aggressive. At such moments, the young girl wished him dead, but when he died, she felt guilty. Thinking about the future was an escape from problems. She wanted to be an actress, model or singer and as a teenager she began to pursue her goals.
She was always looking for love. Three of her partners committed suicide
Although professionally, Dalida was triumphant, privately she could not find happiness. Many men have come into her life, but four of them have completely changed its course. The singer’s first partner was Lucien Morisse, director of Radio Europe 1. The couple met in secret for nearly 5 years. When the man divorced his wife, they decided to formalize the relationship. However, soon after the wedding, the artist’s affair with the painter Jean Sobieski came to light, which put an end to the marriage. A few years later, Morisse took his own life.
A similar fate befell the next partner of the artist. Luigi Tenco could not cope with the defeat suffered during the competition at the festival in San Remo. Distraught, he took his own life in a hotel room. His death shocked Dalida. It was then that she tried to take her own life for the first time, but she received help in time. Over the next years, the artist was looking for love, but in vain. She became pregnant by one of the men, but at the time she was not ready for a child, nor was her lover, who at the time was a penniless student. Dalida decided to have an abortion, but the procedure was not carried out properly. As a result of complications, she lost her chance for motherhood, which completely broke her.
Dalida felt that life had failed her. “It has become unbearable for me”
When she became involved with Richard Chanfray, it seemed that she had finally found the love she longed for. However, it was a deceptive impression, because after almost 10 years the couple decided to separate. Soon after, he and Chanfray decided to commit suicide. Though Dalida tried to regain her joy, she couldn’t shake the guilt she felt for the deaths of the men she loved.
In the end, she decided to take her own life. On May 2, 1987, she asked her housekeeper to finish her work earlier than usual. After the housekeeper left her residence, the star dressed in satin pajamas, then swallowed 120 sleeping pills, washing them down with whiskey.
My life has become unbearable for me. forgive me
— in a suicide note that was found next to her bed. Dalida was found dead by a maid.
