Tadeusz Pietrzykowski was born on April 8, 1917 in Warsaw. He was remembered as a person of many talents. When his father died, he did various things to ensure better conditions for his family. He gave private lessons, taught skating, and made drawings for students of the Academy of Fine Arts and architecture. It was one of his passions, which he cultivated throughout his life. Two years ago in Gdańsk you could see an exhibition of his works.
He started boxing training as a junior high school student, and was trained by, among others, the famous Feliks Stamm in Warsaw’s Legia. Before the war, he won the title of vice-champion of Poland and champion of Warsaw in bantamweight. When the war broke out, he fought in defense of the capital during the September Campaign. Less than a year later, in June 1940, he was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp with the first transport of prisoners. This is where the movie story begins.
Piotr Głowacki showed the peak of possibilities in “Master”
There he is marked with the number 77 and, together with the other inmates, he is forced to do strenuous physical work. Soon, it also becomes an attraction for the Nazis in boxing fights organized by them. During his 3-year stay, he fought dozens of victorious duels in the ring, in which his life was at stake. For his fellow prisoners, he became a symbol of hope for surviving and defeating Nazi terror. The main actor, Piotr Głowacki, in an interview with the portal, talked about the attitude of the hero he played:
The fights he fought had symbolic significance for himself as well. With each subsequent one, hope was born that this camp hell would end someday. By saving himself, he was also saving others. But in counter, in one of the capo’s statements to Pietrzykowski, there are words: »You just want to survive«. Placing yourself between different opinions, taking responsibility for yourself and others forces you to reflect on how much survival itself is a value.
The director of the film Maciej Barczewski stated that the story of Tadeusz Pietrzykowski should be told in a Hollywood style. Not everyone, however, liked the imitation of American models. In cinemas, the film had a poor attendance. It was viewed by just over 200,000 people. viewers. However, they paid attention to one thing – the amazing role of Piotr Głowacki, who perfectly empathized with this character at every moment of the film.
“The Master” appeared on Netflix only on April 10 and has already become the most popular film in Poland. This shows that productions that previously had a cinema premiere, and not only original productions of given services, can also enjoy high viewership on streaming platforms.
