RJP their own, their guidelines, and officials something else. A feminine name whose form is problematic

Although the guidelines and RJP say otherwise, it seems that there are two forms of this feminine name. According to gov.pl, in 2022, this longer form was chosen 723 times, and the shorter form was chosen by only 40 parents. Internet users agree that the longer one is prettier, more feminine and stylish.

Ultimately, the opinion always belongs to the official

On internet forums, the question returns like a boomerang from time to time, is the name Magda as acceptable as the name Magdalena? One of the naming guidelines in Poland says that diminutives are not allowed, and Magda is one, so the answer would be no. According to all opinions of the Polish Language Council, Magda is not an independent form and should not be given to newborn children, so the opinions are negative. However, the final opinion belongs to officials, and as it turns out, they often turn a blind eye and agree to give one or the other form of this name without any problem. However, Magdalena is much more popular. According to forum users, the short form is much less liked and tasteful.

I had Magda in my study group – not Magdalena – and it wasn’t the most convenient name. It happened that on various lists with exam results she was entered as Magdalena – admittedly, an error on the list with results is not a big deal, but always. And once the doctor scolded her for all the times for signing “Magda” and not “Magdalena” – “because the exam is an official matter and we don’t use any diminutives here!”

I myself would prefer to be Magdalena, not Magda, because as I do not like this diminutive, I could always use the second part of the full name, i.e. Lena. I miss this one. Besides, Magdalena sounds somehow lighter and I don’t have the impression that she is missing something.

For me, Magda is a diminutive of Magdalena and nothing more. I don’t understand parents who want a diminutive name for their child, and the full form of the name bothers them so much that they can’t even register it for official occasions.
