Latin Grammy 2021: Rubén Blades, person of the year

His path has been acting, education, and political service. The musician started his career 50 years ago.

Each ceremony, the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences recognizes an ambassador for our music and this year announced the election of Rubén Blades. The Panamanian artist is considered a “cultural pride and social justice”, because his music motivates “to dance, sing and think”, evoked the organization in the profile that prepared the singer and composer to present at the gala tonight of the Latin Grammy Awards.

Blades jumped on stage to perform one of his classic songs, Paula C, inspired by a Bostonian woman of Irish origin, three years older than him who was his partner for seven years.

Another Panamanian artist, Residente, presented the award to the composer, whose career has included acting, education and public service. Residente was shocked by the act, who trembled with emotion when reading a speech towards whom he considers his mentor and his greatest musical hero.

“Success is never a single person, but the result of many combinations of teams,” highlighted the singer-songwriter known as The Poet of Salsa. “To all those who have helped me do my job, thank you very much,” he said goodbye.
