“Sami swoi”: Andrzej Mularczyk based the story on family stories
Andrzej Mularczyk based the story of the feud between the Pawlak and Kargul families on real experiences and memories of his family. The prototype of Kazimierz Pawlak was the writer’s uncle, Jan Mularczyk, a village administrator from the village of Boryczówka, resettled to the Recovered Territories after the war. However, before the cult film was made, Mularczyk created a radio play. “For several days and nights I listened to the stories [stryja – przyp. red.]which was so embedded in me that many years later I wrote a radio play “And there was a holiday” based on it. It was from it that the outline of the film “Sami swoi” was created – admitted in an interview with Ani Andrzej Mularczyk, nor did the director Sylwester Chęciński expect the film to be so successful. “Sami swoi” owes its popularity both to the unforgettable performances of Wacław Kowalski and Władysław Hańcza, as well as to the script and dialogues. “I really wanted it to be funny. The humor in this movie was based on truth. People, situations, conversations, behaviors – years later, Chęciński.
