The “Queen of Polish advertising” will be 66 this year, and although it is said that youth is beauty, she discovered it only as an adult. However, she earned her beauty all her life – with her height of 174 centimeters, she hit the catwalk at the age of 15. The fact that she is photogenic, however, she heard already in kindergarten, when after a group session she was offered an individual one.
“I was doing vain work”
The beginnings of Katarzyna Butowtt’s career date back to 1972. On the street, she was spotted by a photographer working with designer Grażyna Hase, whose collection soon after, with her mother’s consent, she had a chance to present on the catwalk.
I was involved in most of the fashion shows that took place in Poland. I went for Hase, Hoff, Cora, Leda and other establishments. I did my first fashion show as a seven-year-old girl in the Jelonka storefront at Puławska Street in Warsaw. When I came to Moda Polska, the then stars tried to discourage me from finding myself in this world, and they could sew up my pockets or throw a pair of high heels in my shoes. However, they failed to discourage me. I made very good money, I traveled all over the world.
– she told “Wysokie Obcasy”.
She was equally active on the commercial market, taking part in numerous commercials, both on television and in the form of photographs on billboards or in newspapers, which earned her the nickname “the queen of Polish advertising”.
As a model, I was known in a narrow circle. Everyone watched TV commercials. And so it turned out that people still know me today.
– she told “Gazeta Krakowska”. The adventure with modeling went beyond the borders of Poland – she worked in Switzerland, Mongolia and in France in the capital of fashion, Paris. However, she was not fully satisfied with this job.
For many years I did a terribly stupid and vain job. I heard I carried the joy of TV screens. It didn’t satisfy me at all. In college, I was greeted from the doorstep with the words: hello, star! This treatment of my person contributed to my bad mood.
– she told Onet. Despite many activities, she actually found time for her studies – she even gave up several renowned Parisian shows crowning the season for them. She graduated from psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Academy of Catholic Theology, but did not tie the future with this profession and set up her own modeling agency. She retired from the industry in the mid-1990s.
Big comeback
However, the “Queen of Polish advertising” also managed to play in film productions. She made her acting debut in 1991’s Cursed America as Jane. in “Citizen of the World”, “Agata’s Abduction” and “¦ Not About a Cheese Sandwich”. Butowtt’s most popular role remains the character of Wolf’s girlfriend in Władysław Pasikowski’s “Dogs” from 1992.
Despite her acting and modeling career, i.e. two industries where appearance matters, Katarzyna Butowtt felt beautiful only years later.
Today I am brave enough to say it: I was a beautiful girl. I didn’t hear it at home.
– she confessed in an interview for “Wysokie Obcasy” in March this year, approaching seventy. After twenty years of absence, she returned to show business, tempted by the script for “Salt Lake” by Kasia Rosłaniec. She played Helena, a “transparent” woman in her sixties, confronting the subject of passing.
– I played in Kasia’s film because she was looking for a person with a natural appearance. However, I believe that if someone wants to undergo treatments, let them do it themselves – she told “Gazeta Krakowska”. The production hit cinemas on March 17, 2023.
