From trend to closet background, the rise of metallics in fashion

Metallic finishes are an everlasting trend that has taken the catwalks by storm, from becoming the insignia of Paco Rabanne from the sixties until the current collections of truffle gucci Isabel Marant and Dries Van Noten or be the latest stylistic bet of Beyonce.

“These types of costumes always work, and more with great artists. They never go out of style because they are avant-garde and risky garments”, Dominican-Lebanese designer Giannina Azar, dressmaker for Gwen Stefani and Madonna and creator of the metallic piece that Beyoncé wears on the cover of her latest album, explains to EFE, “Renaissance”.

Baptized by Cocó Chanel as “the fashion metallurgist”the Spanish-French Paco Rabanne, who died this year, paved the way for turning impossible materials such as metal and chains into yet another raw material for fashion.

And he did it in an iconic way: from the wardrobe of the film “Barbarella”dressing Jane Fonda, to being the head dressmaker for actress Jane Birkin.

“These finishes work because they are a cheerful and colorful material, which can be both summer and winter”, explains Fran Marto, a renowned stylist for faces such as models Linda Evangelista, Irina Shayk and Nieves Álvarez. He details that he just finished “An outfit for Nieves Álvarez with metallic footwear from LODI together with denim garments”.

Although Rabanne died last February, his empire did not, since the stills he left dressing movie stars like Audrey Hepburn in “Two for the road” they laid the foundations for a way of understanding fashion that put needles aside to make way for tongs and new materials and textures.

Although six decades have passed since the designer’s birth, in which the world of fashion has been reformulated with hundreds of trends, metal and glitter are still established in the house of Rabanne, now with Julien Dossena at the helm.

But the trend is no longer just for Rabanne, but universal: From Dries Van Notten and Gucci to Chloé.

A booming trend

The Spanish artist Rosalía wearing gold at the Latin Grammy Awards and the Spanish-Cuban actress Ana de Armas at the last Oscar gala wearing a Louis Vuitton dress are just some of the celebrities who opt for these finishes. And not only those international label firms do it, but also designers of author label signatures.

“I have dedicated my collection to glitters and metallics completely and in each of the garments”, explains the Dutch creator Isabel Gomila; Although known for her custom-made kimonos, days ago she presented her latest collection, Opulence, a line of dresses, coats and bras in which metallic colors are the resounding protagonists.

In addition to permeating catwalks and among artists for events such as red carpets or video clips and productions, the trend also extends to day-to-day life, from where fast fashion chains sell their own versions of garments such as wide-cut and metallic pants, a trend booming.

A garment that is precisely one of the most emblematic of the line ‘ready-to-wear’ from the Isabel Marant house, which usually has this piece as a wardrobe basic in almost all its collections and which now appears in store windows such as Zara, Bershka or businesses of the so-called ‘fast fashion’.
