The success of the song “Dumka for Two Hearts” is not only due to the performers, i.e. Edyta Górniak and Mietek Szcześniak. The music to the lyrics by Jacek Cygan was created by an excellent composer, Krzesimir Dębski. Working together made the song the biggest hit of 1999, and today it is considered a cult song. “Dumka” was even appreciated during a competition organized by the “Film” magazine. In the aforementioned plebiscite, the song received the Golden Duck for the best film song of the 50th anniversary, which was an undoubted distinction for those times.

He confessed that before the words were written, he and the composer worked on the music. — Composer Krzesimir Dębski selected several musical themes, and finally we chose the one to which the song should be written. So I wrote the words to the music,” the author explained, adding that the work on the piece took three nights. Despite the creators’ hard work, no one was sure whether the director of the film, Jerzy Hoffman, would accept the song. Ultimately, the song turned out to be to the taste of the filmmaker and met all his expectations. – The most important thing was that when we met Jerzy Hoffman and Mr. Michaluk, the film’s producer, the next day after recording, Jerzy Hoffman opened his arms and said that he loved this song – recalled Gypsy.

Jacek Cygan also revealed that initially “Dumka for Two Hearts” was to be called “Piesń Helena i Jana” referring to the main characters of “With Fire and Sword”. However, he eventually decided that it was too obvious and decided to come up with something more original. The idea for the new title came the night before the premiere of the song. — Last night before the song was shown, I came up with: “Dumka for two hearts.” Because the songs written by Słowacki and Goszczyński, praising the beauty and spirit of Ukraine, were dumkas! said the lyricist.
