This year Easter is celebrated on April 9. However, in many homes, preparations for this holiday began last week. After all, there is something to do, especially if that day family appears in our homes. Easter, like Christmas, has its own traditional dishes. They should be ready on Friday so that they can be blessed on Saturday.
Eggs should reign on the Easter table, i.e. a symbol of the rebirth of life. In addition, according to tradition, they are accompanied by homemade roasts, pâtés, jellies, and sour soup with white sausage. And after the salty part of the feast – sweets appear on the table: cheesecakes, baby, mazurkas. How was it celebrated in the past? This was captured in the photos.
Easter in the interwar period
In the photographs, we can see that on the Easter tables there were not only traditional dishes, but also rich decorations. The obligatory element was a white tablecloth with spring embroidery and Easter bunnies and lambs. There was also no shortage of vegetation: boxwood, hyacinths, catkins and tulips added to the whole spring aura.

When it comes to food, just like today, we can recognize Easter cakes, mazurkas, jellies and various types of eggs and roasts. The platters contain not only cakes, but also fruit. There is also no shortage of alcohol – most often wine appears in the photographs.

Needless to say, great attention was paid to details. Each Easter table looks like a work of art. Decorations, which at that time were made by hand, are unique and have their own charm.

Although Easter was celebrated at home with a bang, the magazine notes, there was a trend of Easter tourism at the time. For example, in the 1934 issue of “Dziennik Poznański” you can read the slogan “Holidays will ruin your household budget” and encouragement to go to Copenhagen. “Staying at home is no economy. We will spend money on parties and celebrations, and we will deprive ourselves of the pleasure of healthy rest and refreshing sensations” – informed the “Czas” daily in 1937. It was at that time that many families decided to spend the Christmas period abroad.
