The strangest pregnancy tests of our great-grandmothers. Observations, animals, plants and lots of urine

Women in the old days were curious to see if they were pregnant, just like modern women. Those, however, did not have the Internet, pregnancy tests and doctors at hand. So different ways were dealt with, some funny, some shocking. Interestingly, some even work.

Nowadays, when a woman wants to confirm her assumptions about pregnancy, she has quite a lot of options. She can buy a pregnancy test from the pharmacy, do a blood test or go to the appropriate doctor. Our mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers did not have it so easy. The pregnancy test, which is well known to everyone, did not appear until the late 1980s. In the past, women had to use completely different, slightly different methods.

Selected methods of detecting pregnancy in the past. Some surprise and shock

The earliest known method of detecting pregnancy is believed to be “Egyptian grains”. Women who wanted to check whether they were pregnant peed on barley and wheat grains for several days. If the barley sprouted, the woman was to give birth to a boy, if the wheat sprouted, it meant that the seed would come to a girl. If nothing sprouted, the woman was not pregnant. In medieval Europe, urine was said to be helpful in all diseases and in detecting pregnancy. Each of its shades, smells and textures meant something different. “Pregnancy urine” was “clear, pale lemon or almost white, hazy on the surface.” Even frogs were used to test whether a woman was pregnant by giving them an injection of urine. After injecting such urine, it turned out that the frog began to produce eggs after only 24 hours.

Another controversial method was the needle test. The woman had to prepare her urine in a vessel and then drop a needle into it. If it turned black or rusty over night, the woman was congratulated on her pregnancy. The ancient Egyptians, to confirm pregnancy, gave a woman a mixture of beer and dates to sniff, if the smell made her sick or vomit, it meant that the woman was pregnant. In the 16th century French doctor Jacques claimed to be able to confirm pregnancy by looking into a woman’s eyes. If he noticed deep-set eyes, a drooping eyelid, and a network of veins in the corner of the eye, then the woman was pregnant. Interestingly, there are apparently many confirmations of the effectiveness of the method with barley and wheat.

Free knowledge at your fingertips

Admittedly, in the past, the main focus was on the woman’s urine. It was guessed that its composition, consistency and smell change when a woman is pregnant. Fortunately, nowadays women do not have to carry out such bizarre experiments and experiments. It is enough to go to the pharmacy or doctor at the right time and you can be sure about your condition. Currently, we have something that our grandmothers, great-grandmothers and subsequent generations could only dream of – the Internet. On the Internet, if we can look for proven information, we will find a lot of important and proven things, also about pregnancy. Experts, experienced mothers and doctors are involved. An example is the account run by @marta_lekarzkobiet on Instagram. Such profiles can dispel many of our doubts and educate. However, let’s not forget that they will not replace a visit and conversation with the right doctor live. This is of course a mandatory point.
