They sold their father’s horse and watch to open a film studio. The Warner brothers from Mazovia conquered the world

They produced Casablanca and Goodfellas. We owe them the introduction of the first sound film – “The Jazzband Singer”, for which they received a special Oscar for technical achievements. The event revolutionized the film industry. We are talking about the Warner brothers, who founded one of the largest and most recognizable labels in the world exactly 100 years ago.

Their story is like the fulfillment of the American dream. Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack are Polish immigrants of Jewish descent who immigrated from Krasnosielc, a village in the Masovian Voivodeship, to the United States as children. The brothers, implicitly believing in their passion and trusting their intuition, pawned the family fortune: a horse and their father’s watch. Thanks to this, they gained capital, which they allocated to the purchase of the first projector. Today we know that the investment was right, and cinema without the contribution of the Warner family would not be the same today.

The Warners enriched the films not only with sound, they created the first four-legged star (the German Shepherd Dog Rin Tin Tin in the series), breathed life into the musical and initiated the fashion for gangster films. When they toured Ohio and Pennsylvania with their portable projector in the early 20th century, they showed viewers the Western Heist on the Express by Edwin S. Porter. A few years later, they won the rights to 200 more titles. They started distributing and opening new venues and studios, where they could not only display, but also produce new images themselves.

The first full-length original film by the Warner brothers was My Four Years in Germany, based on the best-selling book by the US ambassador to the court of Kaiser Wilhelm. The production earned an astronomical amount of $ 1.5 million for those times.

However, there were shadows in the studio’s triumphant history. Sam Warner paid for the family success with his life. The creator died as a result of a brain infection, increased by exhaustion, a day before the premiere of the most important film in the lives of the brothers, the aforementioned “Jazzband Singer”.
