Soziolinguistika Kulsterra has given the Jakin Foundation the manuscript of the work “Towards a Mathematical Sociolinguistics” by the linguist, writer and intellectual Txillardegi, and whoever wants to can consult it on the Internet.
Txillardegi wrote this work by hand, which was coordinated by Imanol Esnaola, from the SEI association, and whose mathematical formulas were supervised by Jose Ramon Etxebarria.
In this work, Txillardegi tried to provide a mathematical framework for the possibilities of speaking in Basque. He looked at different groups of speakers, and examined the possibilities depending on their aptitudes. To speak in Basque, both the sender and the receiver must have a minimum capacity, so, based on this premise, he created a model based on formalization and mathematical systematization, as explained by the sociolinguistics cluster.
The cluster states in a note that the mathematical model developed by Txillardegi confirmed his suspicions: “As stated in the book, the mathematical model was developed to deny that the difference between knowledge and use of Basque was due to a culpable negligence of the speakers. Still today, the mathematical theory developed by Txillardegi is an essential tool for carrying out analyzes of use and knowledge”.
