International Children’s Book Day 2023. Where did this idea come from?
Where did the idea of International Children’s Day, also celebrated in 2023, come from? Although this holiday is not yet very popular in our country, it is quite old. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. The date is not accidental, as Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday falls on April 2.
It is hard to find a better patron, because it was Hans Christian Andersen who gained fame thanks to his fairy-tale writing. It was from his pen that such classics as “The Ugly Duckling”, “Thumbelina”, “The Snow Queen” or “The Emperor’s New Clothes” came out. It is therefore not surprising that, in addition to naming streets and theaters after him, the children’s book festival was established on Andersen’s day.
April 2 – International Children’s Book Day
Why do we celebrate April 2nd? International Children’s Day was established to support reading among and for the youngest. Each year a different country hosts the main celebration. Poland played this honorable role in 1980.
The International Chamber for Youth is behind the celebrations. It is a non-profit organization whose task is to promote children’s and youth literature. It was founded in 1953. Its Polish section was established in 1973.
How to celebrate children’s book days?
How to celebrate children’s days? How to celebrate for the benefit of the youngest? First of all, it is worth realizing that April 2 is not the only opportunity to promote children’s and youth literature. Every year, for example, a social campaign ”Cała Polska reads to children” is held. The campaign disseminates the claim that reading to your child for 20 minutes a day is a great way to spend time together. Celebrating children’s book days can be a great opportunity to promote reading among the youngest. It is about both the youngest who can already read on their own and those who are helped by their parents or grandparents.
How to get involved in the celebration? How to celebrate the days? You can always check whether public libraries close to us organize any events related to this day. In some cases, the celebrations are quite grand and include, for example, meetings with people who write children’s books. Sometimes there are also themed evenings with your favorite fairy-tale characters.
But what if the offer of the local libraries is not very rich? It’s worth organizing something on your own. You can organize such an evening in your own home, also inviting the neighbors’ children. The basis here, however, will be to equip the home library with interesting ones. It is good that these copies are nicely decorated and richly illustrated. All this to instill in children the love of reading, which will pay off in the future.
