Palm Sunday and its meaning
What does Palm Sunday mean? This day is referred to as the Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, customarily also ‘willow” or ‘flower’. It is always a movable feast, which falls exactly seven days before. So it can fall between March 15 and April 18.
Palm Sunday itself was instituted to commemorate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. It is known that it was already celebrated in the 4th century. In the Gospels, this event is described as Christ’s entry into the city on a donkey, whom the people were to meet him shouting ”Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” It was customary for the Jews to hold palm branches in their hands and throw them at Jesus’ feet. In churches on this day, not only colorful palms are blessed, but above all, the Passion of the Lord is read, i.e. relevant fragments of the Gospel that describe the last days and hours of Jesus before the crucifixion.
