Taylor Hawkins joined the Foo Fighters in 1997 and almost immediately developed a deep friendship with Dave Grohl. The beginnings were not easy. Hawkins abused drugs. By his own admission, he believed “the nonsense myth of living fast and dying young”. On March 26, 2023, a year has passed since his death.

Taylor Hawkins joined in 1997. The drummer left the band after an argument, so Dave Grohl was looking for a replacement. He did not think about Hawkins, who was performing with Alanis Morrisette’s touring band at the time, because he decided that he would not want to join a then-unknown band when the singer sold out entire stadiums. However, the drummer dispelled doubts and so began the story that ended on March 25, 2022.

In 2001, Hawkins was seriously abusing heroin. During an event organized during a tour, he overdosed and ended up in a London hospital. He was in a coma for two weeks. Dave Grohl kept a vigil by his bed the whole time. Hawkins was like a brother to him, often saying he would take a bullet for him. “I’ve seen so many people lose everything to drugs and die that I panicked,” Grohl told The Times. Hawkins survived, and when he woke up, the first thing he would say to his friend was: Fuck off.

The experience made Hawkins change his habits. In later interviews, he repeatedly emphasized that he was sober. He also became interested in cycling, and during bicycle trips he collected ideas for new songs. He collaborated not only with Foo Fighters. He played in the band Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, he also took part in projects, e.g. zz from Jane’s Addiction. He led an exceptionally intense professional life.

In March 2022, Foo Fighters toured South America. On March 20, they played during the Lollapalooza festival in Argentina. A few days later, Taylor Hawkins began complaining of chest pains. The Foo Fighters drummer died on March 25, 2022 in Bogotá, Colombia. He was 50 years old.
