Janusz Kłosiñski was the audience’s favorite and… Gierek. One sentence ruined his career

For years, Janusz Kłosiñski was successful both on the stage of the theater and on the screen. The earned reputation and recognition in the environment was crossed out by one ill-considered sentence. When public opinion considered him a traitor, he decided to disappear from the industry. How did the fate of the outstanding actor develop?

At one time, Janusz Kłosiński was one of the most popular Polish artists. However, all his achievements were forgotten when he praised the actions of Wojciech Jaruzelski. Public opinion was merciless.

He dreamed of becoming a surgeon. He became an actor by accident

Janusz Kłosiński planned a career as a surgeon and even started medical studies, but the outbreak of the war thwarted his plans. Soon after, he moved to Radom to take care of his sister and her little son after the woman’s husband was transported to the Auschwitz camp. In 1943, he married Wiesława Hańska, and two years later their daughter Grażyna was born. After the end of the war, he returned to his hometown of Łódź and started working in an ironworks. It was then that he read the announcement about exams for the theater school and decided to try his hand. “I was supposed to pretend to be crazy all day, scratching my soles and having a seizure every now and then and screaming, ‘Blood!’ – interrogations. He became a student at the age of 26.

Initially, he performed on the stages of Łódź and Warsaw theaters, and his roles enjoyed great recognition among the audience. In 1953, he stood in front of the camera for the first time, playing a cameo in “Soldier of Victory”. His career quickly gained momentum. He has performed with the greatest Polish directors, e.g. with Wojciech Jerzy Has, Jerzy Skolimowski and Ewa and Czesław Patelscy. The greatest popularity brought him unforgettable acting performances in cult productions, such as “Czterej armored men and a dog” or , as well as the radio play “Jeziorany”.

He publicly praised Jaruzelski’s actions. It ended his career

The actor has never hidden his political views. He was a member of the Polish United Workers’ Party and a favorite of Edward Gierek. When in December 1981 Wojciech Jaruzelski introduced martial law in Poland, a boycott of the state media began. Kłosiński, as one of many artists, was invited to the strike. His refusal would certainly have gone unnoticed if not for the sentence he decided to share on the vision. — I said on the air that enough of the strikes and the disintegration of the state recognized by all the countries of the world. I considered the introduction of martial law to put an end to this unjustified brawl – he recalled in “Angora”.

The consequences of these words turned out to be severe, as he found out during the performance “The Wedding” staged at the National Theatre. As soon as he started his lines, the audience booed, booed and applauded loudly. “After that, I never went on stage again. Not because I felt guilty, but because, in my opinion, the temple, the theater and the great Wyspiański were desecrated, he said later. The public considered him a traitor, and the artistic community completely turned its back on him. Ultimately, Kłosiński decided to withdraw from the industry.

After the end of his career, he took care of the house, he also liked sports. He later retired early, but continued to perform in the radio drama. The last time he appeared on the screen was in 2007 in the film “Everything will be fine”. In the last years of his life he used a wheelchair. He died on November 8, 2017, just one day before his 97th birthday.
