Rubens with six Fryderyk nominations. But this Piotr Rubik doesn’t clap

Rubens, or Piotr Rubik, received six nominations for the Fryderyk 2023 awards. And although he was qualified as a debutant, because “Songs that nobody wanted” is his first solo album, he has been known in the industry for years.

– both artists have six chances for statuettes. Rubik was nominated in the following categories: author / author / author team of the year; producer / producer / production team; artist of the year; phonographic debut of the year; track of the year; album of the year – indie pop. And although he was classified as a debutante, because “Songs that nobody wanted” is his first solo album, he has been known in the industry for years.

Rubens – talented and (almost) self-sufficient

Rubens has been the guitarist of Daria Zawiałow for years, with whom he has also been involved privately for some time. As a musician, he performed on stage, e.g. with Vito Bambino, Dawid Podsiadło or the king and Igo on the routes of Meskie Grania. Even earlier, he recorded with the band LemON, wrote e.g. with Mroz, collaborated with the creators of the Mazolewski/Porter project.

He created a solo music project during the pandemic. When we look at the single “Everything OK?”, we read:

Music: Rubens; Words: Rubens; Production: Rubens; Guitar, bass, keyboards, backing vocals: Rubens; Percussion: Michal Bryndal

The artist actually composed, wrote the lyrics and sang all the songs himself, instrumentally he helped himself only when recording the drums.

On the “Studio 96.0” podcast, Rubens on “Everything OK?” that he didn’t think of the number as a commercial radio hit, but felt it was good and valuable and should be the first single:

Nobody expected such a success of this song. I rarely use that word, but here I’m not afraid of it. In the case of a guy who’s never released anything before, he didn’t do anything as him… I’ve never sung before, nobody heard my voice before and he puts out this number and what happens to him is that nobody was prepared for it.

And so 29 weeks ago he shared the information that he finished recording a solo album:

This Piotr Rubik doesn’t clap

Before he started publishing online as Rubens, he used the pseudonym “I don’t clap”. This is of course a reference to another well-known Piotr Rubik, in whose greatest hit clapping is of great importance. The song “Let them say it’s not love” was so popular at the time that there was even a saying “your old Rubik’s claps”, which was synonymous with embarrassment. She promoted the album “Tu Es Petrus” released in 2005.

Polish music awards will be presented on April 22 in Arena Gliwice – then we will find out, among others, how many Fryderyk awards will go to Rubens.
