The family of Maria Pakulnis had a difficult financial situation, the actress said that the conditions in which she was brought up affected her self-esteem:
I was a very lonely child who had been through a lot since I was little. I had to deal with it. Women are probably stronger in every way. My sister and I survived, but my brothers didn’t. You could say it’s a miracle that I never broke.
Maria Pakulnis: I felt inferior
“I was a shy and introverted child. I didn’t have this or that. In elementary school, I had a worse sandwich and a worse apron. I felt inferior, so it was always safe to stand aside. I did not lean out – the actress recalled in the broadcast “I have no questions”.
Maria Pakulnis’ parents came from Lithuania, she was born after their move to Poland in Giżycko. Her mother did not fully find her way to the new country, she missed her family who stayed in Lithuania. Pakulnis told Pani magazine last year:
I always saw her sad, without the will to live, as if she was in some deep depression. She was not warm, she never hugged us. She didn’t read us anything, she didn’t tell us anything…
About her father, who worked in a dairy, the actress said that after his stay in a gulag, where he was forced to work on a railway construction during World War II, he was “mentally disturbed” and “drank a lot”. In 2016, she explained in an interview with Fakt: Uncle was shot in Katyn, and the father had to reveal himself to the authorities to save his grandfather from prison. He himself was sent to a hard camp in Vorkuta for his political past. He came back from there mentally and physically scarred, but he never talked about it.
