Theater saved her
Whoopi Goldberg chose the first part of her stage name because of the… flatulence she often experienced while performing, and her stomach then resembled a “whoopee pillow”, or “fart pillow”. The second part was suggested by her mother, thinking that a Jewish family name would help Whoopi make a career in Hollywood. She didn’t have an easy childhood. She grew up in Manhattan surrounded by drugs, including heroin, to which she became addicted as a teenager, which caused her to drop out of high school. Love saved her – at the age of 18 she married her doctor, who helped her fight addiction.
The relationship did not last long. After her divorce, she moved to California, where she co-founded the San Diego Repertory Theater and began collaborating with the Spontaneous Combustion theater group and later with the Black Street Hawkeyes improvisational group in San Francisco. All of this resulted in her award-winning one-man production, The Spook Show, which ran on Broadway for 156 performances. The actress was then discovered by Steven Spielberg, which contributed to the development of her further career. Since “The Color Purple” she has played in dozens of films and TV series.
Not just phone sex
In one of the episodes of Goldberg’s “The View” from December 16, 2011, Elisabeth Hasselbeck talked about the situation of mothers who work from home as telephone operators, increasingly also as part of a sex phone. Sherri Shepherd, who participated in the conversation, seemed outraged by this fact, stating that she “would never allow her child to visit a home where someone’s mother works like this”. Whoopi was offended by these words and confessed that she herself had found employment in phone sex years ago as a young girl, moreover, also being a mother – and a single one at that. As a 19-year-old, she was able to combine childcare with work. She added that “the money was great” and the job “requires being a good actor”, which helped her not only to avoid paying for kindergarten, but also to prepare for her future profession in a way. When the opponent of this way of earning claimed that it was a thing of the past, the comedian joked – “How do you know? You don’t know what I do at home!”.
When I was younger, money was great. Today, you see, people would know my voice.
she added later. The operator of the sex phone is just one of the unusual jobs that the comedic actress took up. It is known that she was also employed in the morgue, where … she painted corpses, she also worked as a bricklayer, bank teller and washing dishes in a restaurant.
