Kożuchowska with nominations, Zawierucha with her own category. The Blessed Virgin Mary is also fighting for Snakes 2023

The Pop Culture Academy of Everything announced nominations for the twelfth edition of Snakes – film anti-awards, for productions that premiered in 2022 and their creators. Patryk Vega’s “Invisible War” has a chance to win as many as 13 times, and the main category has been exceptionally extended. Interestingly, among the nominees we can also find such “creators” as the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Holy Spirit. The winners will be announced in April.

Snakes are anti-film awards that have been awarded since 2012. They are often referred to as the Polish equivalent of Golden Raspberry. Their name refers to Marek Piestrak’s cult film “The Curse of the Valley of Serpents” from 1987, which is widely regarded as one of the most clumsy pictures in the history of Polish cinematography.

Snakes 2023 will be awarded in as many as 14 categories

This year, we had to wait much longer than usual for the nominations to be announced, but as mentioned by the Pop Culture Academy of Everything (PAW), last year provided a lot of “gems” in Polish cinematography, which meant that as many as ten titles would compete in the most important category:

We had a lot of work picking the best of being the worst. So we finally decided (following the Oscars) to expand the main category, the Great Serpent nomination, from five to ten titles. We hope this will make it easier for viewers to pick out movies so bad they’re worth watching

The core of this year’s nominations are: Patryk Vega with the films “Invisible War” (13 nominations) and “Love, Sex & Pandemic” (6 nominations). “Gierek” (12) and “365 days: This day/Another 365 days” (9) also have a good chance, which, due to the high consistency of the message in some categories, the organizers decided to treat as one title.

In addition, this year’s Serpents also increased the number of categories. There will be as many as 14 of them, because the Pop Culture Academy of Everything decided to add a new category this year, which they define “probably disposable”. It is Rafał Zawierucha’s “Worst Role”. The organizers say that he has starred in a staggering number of films, and they still had difficulty choosing the five most embarrassing roles.

Among the nominees, there were also well-known faces – for more than one nomination, e.g. Małgorzata Kożuchowska, who won three nominations in one category “worst female role”. The list also includes Michał Koterski, Cezary Żak, Antoni Pawlicki and Anna Mucha. However, the biggest surprise is the placement among the nominees… of the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary as the screenwriter and producer of the film “Called”, respectively. As reported by PAW:

According to the description of the creators on the posters of the film “Called”, this year we had to nominate the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Virgin Mary for Serpents (we repeat, it’s not us, it’s a decision made by the filmmakers and disseminated in the end credits of the films)

  • “365 Days: This Day”/”The Next 365 Days” (dir. Barbara Białowąs, Tomasz Mandes; prod. Ewa Lewandowska, Tomasz Mandes, Maciej Kawulski) – for the film trauma in which the second and third time turn out to be even worse than the first.
  • “Where the devil can’t, he will send baby” (dir. Heathcliff Janusz Iwanowski; prod. Jolanta Owczarek, Heathcliff Janusz Iwanowski) – for the unleavened-infantile approach to recent history, in which the heroines’ hairstyles are more expressive than the plot.
