Is there a difference between 999 and 112? A paramedic dispels doubts

What is the difference between 999 and 112? Which one should we call for help? These questions are answered by a paramedic.

In 2018, the number 997 was abolished. When we dial these three digits, we connect to the operator of the number 112. A similar situation was to occur with the number 999, which directed us directly to the medical dispatch room. What about this number? And what number should I call for a medic in?

112 was supposed to replace 999. Statistics show that’s a bad idea

For several years, there has been a discussion about redirecting calls from the 999 emergency number to 112 operators. Already 5 years ago, the 997 number was connected to 112 and today callers are automatically connected to the dispatcher, not the duty officer. Similar plans also applied to emergency calls, but research and statistics show that this is not the best idea. The reason for this is that the waiting time is too long. We read that statistically, when we call 112, the notification handling time is 243.55 seconds, and when we make a call directly from 999 – 116.31 seconds. This means that the waiting time for help is twice as short, which is why the government decided to leave the 999 number active indefinitely.

999 or 112? Which number to call?

On the tiktok profile, the paramedic explains why there is such a big difference in the time of servicing a caller to the emergency number. It turns out that when we make a call to 112, we connect not with the medic, but with the operator. The latter, after collecting basic information, redirects us to the medical dispatcher, to whom we also give a quick interview. Only then does the person we talk to decide to send an ambulance. Operator 112 does not have such a legal possibility. – By calling 999, we connect to the medical dispatcher. It is a doctor or a paramedic and she decides. It’s faster, she explained.
