Jim Gordon in the 60s and 70s was one of the most sought-after drummers in the industry. He played with George Harrison, The Beach Boys, John Lennon, Nancy Sinatra, Cher and Alice Cooper. He recorded great hits, but his greatest recognition came with the 1970 song “Layla” performed by Eric Clapton and the group Derek and the Dominos. The artist was a co-author of one of the most popular rock compositions of all time.

In the prime of his career, Gordon began to display paranoid behavior. He was unpredictable and aggressive. The artist did not avoid alcohol and drugs, which, combined with mental problems, exacerbated their symptoms. While on tour with Joe Cocker, he hit his then-girlfriend Rita Coolidge. The woman confessed that the attack was so strong that she slammed against the wall at the other end of the corridor.

Gordon’s bouts of aggression ended in tragedy. In June 1983, he murdered his mother, claiming that “voices in his head” persuaded him to do so. The musician hit the woman with a bludgeon and then stabbed her. She was 72 years old.

It wasn’t until after the murder that the drummer was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1984, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
