Japanese novelist for literature, winner of the Nobel Prize Kenzaburo Oea progressive icon who challenged the conformity of modern society, died at the age of 88publisher Kodansha reported on Monday.

“He died of old age in the early morning hours of March 3,” the publisher said in a statement. He said his family had already held a funeral.

Known for his pacifist and anti-nuclear stance, Oe was part of a generation of writers “deeply wounded” by the Second World War, “but full of hope for revival”.

Born in 1935, Oe grew up in a wooded valley on the island of Shikoku, western Japan, a remote place he often evoked in his writings as a microcosm of humanity.
