The publishing house Katakrak denounces the attack against its book “Puta zikinak” in a bookstore in Baiona
Euskaraz irakurri: Katakrak argitaletxeak “Puta zikinak” liburuari Baionan egindako erasoa salatu du
The Katakrak publishing house has announced today that a “transphobic group” destroyed at the end of February all the copies of the book “Puta zikinak. Sexu-langileen aldeko eskubideen borroka”, published by the Pamplona publishing house itself, on display in a Baiona bookstore; “all were deteriorated and had to be removed,” they say.
“Puta zikinak. Sexu langileen aldeko eskubideen borroka” is a work written by Juno Mac and Molly Smith, sex workers and militants of the Scottish Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement group, from the conviction that “nobody is above feminism”, and analyzes In a detailed and panoramic view, according to Katakrak, “a violence that sex workers suffer daily through the instruments of capitalism and patriarchy: laws, police, immigration policy, stigmatizing and criminalizing communication policies, violence from misogynistic men…” .
In a note with five points, the publisher has stated that the attacks against books “take us back to recent dark times of the thirties and forties of the 20th century”, and has underlined the fact that this attack against a book in Basque had place in one of the few bookstores that on its shelves offer a place for that language in Lapurdi.
Finally, they have vindicated “the word, the debate and the critical spirit” against the attack, and they have remembered that, as it happens with all books, “you do not have to agree with zikinak whore, no one is forced to read it or buy it. What’s more, it can be read and fiercely criticized. But physically destroying books, with the intention of intimidating booksellers, shopkeepers, publishers and authors, is a matter of another order, and one that is in tune with the authoritarian era we are entering.”
From the publisher, they have told us that in ten years of travel, with more than 20,000 titles in the catalogue, they have never received any attack until now despite having published and sold compromised titles of all kinds.
