Elizabeth Smart lived with her parents and siblings in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. On June 5, 2002, someone broke into their home. It was very early, so the whole family was still asleep. The kidnapper put a knife to Elizabeth’s throat and threatened to kill the entire family if the girl did not leave the house with him.

The search was publicized in the media, and Elizabeth’s parents gave interviews in which they asked the kidnapper to return their daughter to them. Police, sniffer dogs and helicopters were involved. Unfortunately to no avail. Elizabeth’s 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine, didn’t add much to the case either. At the time of the abduction, she was covered with a blanket and could not see her face.

The kidnapper turned out to be Brian David Mitchell. His home was just 7 km from Elizabeth’s family home. It was there that he imprisoned the girl. His wife, Wanda Barzee, helped him hold the 14-year-old girl. The woman washed and dressed the girl in special robes in which she was to proceed to the ceremony. For Mitchell believed he was a priest of Melchizedek, and Elizabeth Smart was to be the first of many virgins he intended to marry. The kidnapper raped Elizabeth daily and kept her chained so she had no chance of escape.

Brian and Wanda took Elizabeth into town every now and then. However, they put a wig, glasses and a scarf on her so that no one would recognize her. A few months after the kidnapping, a certain Mary Katherine made the connection who the kidnapper’s voice belonged to. She was sure it was Emmanuel’s voice. A man who used to do roof work on their house. His memory portrait was published in the media. Then his ex-wife recognized him and gave his real details. When Mitchell and Barzee went back to town, one of the residents recognized the kidnapper and called the police. It was then that Elizabeth was released. Brian David Mitchell was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Elizabeth Smart got married in 2012. He has three children. Currently, the woman is a reporter for ABC News and works for the safety of children. Since 2019, she has been running a self-defense program for women called “Smart Defense”. She received the Diller-von Furstenberg Award, which is awarded to brave women who act for the benefit of others. She used the cash prize to open her own foundation, the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.
