Although the topic of eating insects has become loud only recently, few people are aware of the fact that they are found in many popular and eaten products. The only difference is that so far they have been allowed in a slightly different form. Where can you find them?
Worms in popular products? Few people know that they eat them every day
The consumption of crickets whole or in the form of flour has become famous thanks to the recent decision of the European Union. This is disgusting for many people. Nevertheless, it turns out that some products that have long been part of our diet also contain insects, albeit in a slightly different form. We are talking about some preservatives that use prepared insect bodies.
Mysterious codes on product packaging. Which insects hide in their composition?
Preservatives are designed to extend the shelf life of the product and prevent its spoilage, which is why we can find them in almost everything. They are marked with the letter E. However, few people know that they often contain insects in a prepared form. They mainly act as a dye, but not only. Under what numbers?
- E120 is a popular cochineal, an insect dye. It is used in red drinks and sweets, and is made from the prepared bodies of cactus bugs.
- E121 is another variety of the same dye, which in turn is most often added to yoghurts, mainly those with raspberry or strawberry flavor.
- E904 is used for the production of sweets, fruit and vegetable glazing. It is made from bugs that live on trees, i.e. bugs.
