When to plant potatoes into the soil? Deadlines vary
The date of planting potatoes largely depends on , which varies depending on the region of Poland we live in. It is safe to start at the end of April or the beginning of May, although there are many people who start planting in the last days of March. Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that the best time is when the temperature of the soil at a depth of 10 cm begins to exceed 8 degrees Celsius, although in case of unexpected cooling you don’t have to worry about frozen shoots. All because of the fact that potatoes have a great ability to regenerate and quickly sprout new shoots.
When to plant potatoes so that they are ready for harvest sooner? Bet on germination
If you want an extra early harvest, you can sprout earlier. This means that approximately 6 weeks before the planned planting (i.e. preferably in February), they should be poured into boxes. The room where you put them should be bright, warm, between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, and relatively humid. In such conditions, the potatoes will soon start sprouting, and when they reach about 1.5 – 2 cm in length, they will be ready to be transplanted into the garden.
When to harvest potatoes? It depends on their purpose
Traditionally, planted potatoes mature up to 60 days, however, with it is worth waiting until they fade or the lower leaves start to turn yellow before digging them up. This way you can be sure that the tubers underground are big enough. However, if you care about harvests that you can store over the winter, it is better to wait until August or September, when their shoots will start to wither.
