It’s not so good with the rock legend. Phil Collins now has to “enjoy life” at home

Phil Collins’s health has not been the best for several years. Nevertheless, last year he toured with the Genesis group, and their tour was to be extended. However, the singer struggled to finish live concerts, and after the last concert it was announced that the cult band would not play anymore. Now, the band’s bassist, Mike Rutherford, has spoken out on the matter, revealing more details about Collins’ health.

The lead singer and drummer for Genesis has been battling serious health issues since 2007, when he suffered a spinal injury that damaged the vertebrae in the upper part of his neck. The 72-year-old musician developed these difficulties due to many years of drumming and alcohol problems. Lately, he has been using a cane or a wheelchair more and more often.

Phil Collins now ‘enjoying his time at home’

Mike Rutherford, who is the bass player for Genesis, recently hosted BBC Breakfast on BBC One. He decided to raise the subject of the health of a teammate, which does not inspire optimism. He said Collins “is a lot more immobile than he used to be.”

He added that he was very sorry about this, but mentioned that the artist was “in a good mood” during the last tour. In the conversation, he also made it clear that Collins is not leaving the house at the moment:

Now he is doing well at home, enjoying life. He has worked very hard all these years. I think he enjoys his time at home.

Later in the conversation, he mentioned that his second band Mike + The Mechanics was going on tour soon, with Phil’s son, Nic Collins. The 21-year-old boy will play drums during the tour.

Mike Rutherford also began to consider which of the men is the better drummer:

I always support fathers because I am from this generation. Phil is the greatest drummer, but Nic is fantastic too. He’s like his dad, but a little different.

For Phil Collins’ son, the Mike + The Mechanics tour will not be a new experience. He had already played drums on the Genesis tour, as well as on his father’s solo tour a few years ago. Phil Collins explained this in 2021 with no other option due to his poor health:

It’s kind of a bit of a challenge, which is very annoying because I’d love to play there with my son. However, I can hardly hold drumsticks in my hand, so it would be a physical barrier for me to overcome – the musician noted.
