The creators of “The Last of Us” cut a key scene from the game. They explain why, but action fans won’t be pleased

The creators of the series “The Last of Us” once again decided to make a drastic change in the adaptation to the original, for which they were criticized by the players. In the source material, one of the scenes of the penultimate episode of the series was crucial for the character’s relationship, it did not appear on the screen at all.

“” even before the official premiere of the first episode was hailed as the best adaptation of a computer game in history. The cooperation of the filmmakers with the creators of the game and the great respect for the source material certainly contributed to the success of the series.

Although the TV series is very close to the original, the authors, with courage and great awareness of the media they work with, expand the gaming contexts, sometimes adding stories, and sometimes getting rid of, in their opinion, redundant threads.

The penultimate episode of “The Last of Us” revealed Ellie’s strength and determination to the viewers and finally proved what the girl is able to do to achieve her goal. The heroine meets David (Scott Shepherd) and James (Troy Baker) while hunting. The first – a preacher, the leader of a religious sect – tries to manipulate her, and the climax of the characters’ relationship is their face-to-face conversation.

The creators of “The Last of Us” gave up an important key scene in the game. They explain why

In the game, David and Ellie’s relationship was different. The heroes had to join forces to fight against the infected. During the clash, they defended each other, which inevitably created a bond between them. This theme was missing in the series. Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin explained why they got rid of a rather significant and arguably spectacular scene from the script.

In a podcast dedicated to the series, they explained their decision.

We could have done that – had a herd of running infected who could get at the heroes at any time, but then the episode would have focused on that and we wanted it to work on a different level. We focused on the conversation. David is sneaky, doesn’t push, lets Ellie joke around, doesn’t seem to take anything personally, is nice. This is a classic example of a gaslighter (gaslighting is psychological violence involving the manipulation of another person in such a way that the victim of violence over time stops trusting their judgments – editorial note) and the torturer.

This is not the first such decision of the creators of the series, as well as the reason for the most frequent objections from viewers towards the production. Especially players are disappointed with the reduction of action scenes with the infected – they expected much more. Mazin emphasizes, however, that these are well-thought-out and deliberate measures. He points out that the creators wanted to focus on the characters and their constant life in danger. Emphasize that the world in which the characters have to function is not safe and you don’t need a meeting with a horde of the infected to become a tragedy.
