The artist Txomin Badiola (Bilbao, 1957) has been in charge of preparing the poster for the 2023 edition of the Musical Fortnight, a classical music festival that will be held between August 3 and September 1.
Badiola received the Gure Artea award in 2015, and has been the subject of two retrospective exhibitions at the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.
At the request of the Fortnight, the poster reflects the aesthetics of Jorge Oteiza (Badiola is a great expert on Oteiza and author of the catalog raisonné on his work), on the twentieth anniversary of his death: “Whenever I receive a commission of this style , I try to separate myself from my work, because my plastic works are working from a very different idea of communication; in fact, they are dealing with a certain level of isolation. The works oppose a resistance to being consumed as a message. While a poster, by definition, has to ensure that the message is easily received”, explained Badiola.
The Bilbao artist opted for the idea of resorting to a work by Oteiza in which a more direct link with music was established, and he chose the sketches made in 1956 for the realization of the mural entitled “Direct relief. Tribute to Bach”, Originally located in a private residence and which is currently part of the collection of the Museum of the University of Navarra.
Before Badiola, artists such as Azucena Vieites, Ibon Aranberri, Pello Irazu, Itziar Okariz, Juan Luis Goenaga, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, Elena Odriozola, Jesus Mari Lazkano…
