Eagles 2023. “IO” by Skolimowski is the best film of the year and more [LISTA ZWYCIÊZCÓW]

The jubilee 25th edition of the Polish Film Awards Eagles is behind us. This year’s gala was again hosted by Maciej Stuhr. Between awards, he played the piano for the audience, and at the end of the gala he jokingly referred to the scandal involving his father. The best film of the year was “IO”, which also has a chance to win an Oscar for the best international film. Skolimowski’s film won a total of six awards.

“IO” is a film in which we see the world through the eyes of the title donkey, who travels a long way from the Polish circus to the Italian slaughterhouse. During this time, he encounters different people on his way who treat the animal very differently. The only person whom IO treats as “his” is Kassandra (Sandra Drzymalska) – his trainer from the circus, with whom he has to part with at the beginning of the film. Throughout its wandering, the donkey does not lose its innocence, and the film is an allegorical story that is supposed to bring the viewers closer to the reality of animal life in the modern world.

Jerzy Skolimowski: I prefer the Academy to reward me, not a bunch of…

“IO” won statuettes in the categories of best cinematography, best editing, and best music. When it turned out that the film also won the award for the best screenplay, Jerzy Skolimowski, who is now in Los Angeles, was contacted. He said to the audience:

Thank you, Academy. And taking this opportunity to personally congratulate the wonderful employees on this film, I congratulate Paweł for the best music, Agnieszka for the best editing and Michał for the best cinematography. These were my closest collaborators and all the awards that this film won and may still collect, I share with them. Thank you.

They were reunited with Skolimowski when he won another award – for best direction. It is worth mentioning that three directors were nominated in this category this year. This is how he referred to the win again to those gathered at the Polish Theater in Warsaw, referring to last year’s verdict of the jury at the Gdynia Film Festival, which completely omitted “IO”:

This number of awards for “IO” is some kind of compensation for a completely different event than this one. I’d rather the Academy reward me than a bunch of… let each one call it his own. I just hate obscene words,” he added.

A moment later, the director reconnected with Warsaw, because he also received the award for the best film of the year. He concluded the last award with a cheerful “IO” and a toast with white wine. Earlier, he also added that he received the greatest help in the production of the film from the Polish Film Institute, noting the pro-animal character of the film.

Dawid Ogrodnik: If my hero were with us today, he wouldn’t be here today. He would be with the people on the border

The winner of the Eagle 2023 in the category of the best leading male role was Dawid Ogrodnik for his participation in the film “Johnny”. This is his third award. Earlier, he managed to win statuettes for his roles in the films “Live Feels Good” and “Silent Night”. Receiving the award, he announced that “it will not be political”, but in the end he decided to comment on the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, referring to the figure of Father Jan Kaczkowski:

If my hero were with us today, he wouldn’t be here today. He would be people on the border, they need our solidarity, our support and are pushed into the dark forest where children die. These children die every day, the situation in Poland is dramatic. That is why I am appealing to everyone, these children are reaping the harvest of what kind of politics we practice and what country we live in.

The first Eagle for Dorota Pomykała. The actress was happy

The award for the best leading female role went to Dorota Pomykała, who played in the film “Woman on the Roof”. It was her first nomination and award. The woman went out for the statuette very happy and moved, which she gave vent to on stage, saying:

But I’m glad you! I am very happy that for the first time I came across such a wonderful jubilee. (…) I love my character very much and I’m glad that the Academy liked me. But this film wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Anna Jadowska (director – editorial note).

Maciej Stuhr referred from the stage to … Jakimowicz!

The report from the red carpet was conducted by Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, and the host of the gala – as many times before – was Maciej Stuhr. The actor began the ceremony with a joking mention of the films nominated for the Eagles so far with his participation. Later, he referred to artificial intelligence and GPT Chat for most of the event.

In one of the moments of the gala, he began to say that he asked the artificial intelligence if the announcer could “get killed” for an unfunny joke. The chat answered him: “No. but it depends on the situation.” Later, he decided to make a joke about political correctness in cinema, which is criticized by some nowadays. Stuhr did not hold back, which caused bursts of laughter from the audience:

Today, many films would not pass. »Sexmission«, because sexism, »How I unleashed World War II«, because racism, »Sami Swoi«, because xenophobia, and »Young Wolves«, because Jakimowcz.

The good humor did not leave the presenter after that either. He decided to refer to a recent case involving his father, who was convicted of hitting a motorcyclist:

I know an actor who once gave a great voice to a donkey. You can guess who we’re talking about. One could say: the most famous 07 in the history of Polish cinema since the times of Lieutenant Borewicz. Who wouldn’t like to vote for him in the donkey of the year category?
