Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington has died. The artist was the last living musician from the band’s original line-up. He was 71 years old.

Gary Rossington is dead. The American musician, songwriter was the co-founder and last original member of the rock legend Lynyrd Skynyrd. The musicians launched a great hit “Sweet Home Alabama” released on the group’s second album “Second Helping” in 1974.

The artist died on March 5 at the age of 71, just four months before the start of the band’s planned tour. The guitarist’s cause of death has not been disclosed, although his heart problems have been rumored for years. Rossington’s ailments worsened in 2010 and occasionally excluded the musician from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s activities.

The band released an official statement regarding the death of a friend.

It is with deepest regret and sadness that we announce the loss of our brother, friend, family member, songwriter, guitarist Gary Rossington today. He is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven, where he performs as beautifully as ever.

Rossington struggled with addiction to drugs and painkillers for years. He became addicted after experiencing a plane crash in 1977, which killed Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, as well as three other people on board. 20 passengers were saved.

In 1980, the artist began his activity in the Rossington Collind Band. The group released two albums before disbanding. After the deaths of Billy Powell in 2009 and Larry Junstrom 10 years later, he was the last surviving original member of the band.
