The Colombian gave an emotional speech when collecting his award for best Latin artist in the Europe Music Awards of the MTV network.
Maluma was proclaimed the winner in the fight for him Europe Music Award (EMA) from the MTV network for the best Latin artist during the 28th edition of the award ceremony, held in the Hungarian capital.
“This goes to Medellín, Colombia, which is no longer Pablo Escobar anymore, now it is ‘Maluma, baby’ and J Balvin”, he said when collecting his award at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna, the first awarded in the evening.
In his speech, he thanked his team and his mother (“Mom, I love you,” he said in Spanish), after declare himself “very proud to be Latino.”
“It has been hard to get here,” he also recalled, happy with his award and a few minutes from also being one of the artists who have performed at the gala with his single MAMA TETEMA.
His distinction as the best Latin artist is even more deserving if the category of his rivals for that award is taken into account: Bad Bunny, J. Balvin, Rosalía, Rauw Alejandro and Shakira.
Maluma, who also came from winning last year in the category of best Latin video at the Video Music Awards (VMA), the American branch of these MTV awards, adds the EMA to a career also endorsed by the Latin Grammy 2018 for best contemporary pop vocal album won for FAME.
The musician, singer and composer born in Medellín in 1994, began his recording career with the album Magic (2012), followed by four more, until Papi Juancho (2020), which includes his success HAWAI.
In addition to him, other Latin figures who have been awarded according to their region in the moments prior to the MTV EMAs gala have been Alemán (best Latin artist in North America), Teen (best Latin artist in South America), Sebastian Yatra (as the best Latin artist in Central America) and Manu Gavassi (the best Brazilian artist).
