Interview with Ana Torroja: ‘I like working with young people, musically daring, unbiased’

What should Ana Torroja have to overcome after 40 years of musical career?

Oh! is that the word to transport I don’t like it very much! (laughs). “What else do I have to do?” I would say, right? I’m sure many things (…). I am one of those people who don’t like to repeat themselves. (…) When I sat down to think about what I wanted to do for the last job, I didn’t know; I said, “What if I’ve already done almost everything?” That I need to discover more.

Sometimes it happens to me that when I put my energy into something, it happens. (…) Suddenly it comes to me from Spain, where several producers of electronic music want to work with me, and it is as if I saw the light; I said, “This is what I have to do.” I like working with young, musically daring people who are not prejudiced, who contribute to me and who teach me. I listen to everything from classical music (to) jazzdoll, stone…, a little bit of everything, because for me I can find inspiration in every kind of music. And has the urban genre seduced you?

I like the city; I think there are good things. And maybe it’s one of the genres that seems most difficult for me to pull off; but not because I don’t like it, but because it’s like they said to me, “Do it stone“Well, I don’t have a voice to do stonealthough I also like to listen stone. Ana Torroja: I don’t miss anything from the Mecano era

As a woman, what barriers have you had to overcome in your career?

It was more than a barrier, trying to differentiate myself and not mislead the public between my solo career and what my career with Mecano was. It was more that fight than a fight to be a woman in the musical career. I was raised in equality; So for me it has always been a natural thing. It is true that you often have to make an effort to show that you can do it and that you are worth it; but if you look at the world music scene, many of the great artists are women. I think music is one of the places where women are most respected and recognized.

As the name of your tour says, what does ‘returning’ to Ecuador’s stages mean to you?

For me it is a gift to return to Ecuador. I always want to go back, because I have wonderful memories of the time I was there. The time always seems very long (between each trip), the waiting seems eternal. I am very excited to return, with a great desire to meet Quito’s audience again, to meet new people who certainly have not attended or have not attended any of my concerts in a long time; and eager to make them happy.
