King Carlos III will be crowned on Saturday, May 6It will be a less ostentatious ceremony than that of his mother, the late Elizabeth II, but which will still have all its traditional actions, such as the application of chrism oil.

This oil was consecrated on Friday, at a ceremony held in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Christians believe that Jesus, the son of God, is buried in that temple. Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilus III and Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem Hosam Naoum were in charge of the consecration.

The oil will be used to anoint Carlos III and Camila Parker Bowles – the monarch’s former lover, now his wife and given the title of Queen Consort – at their coronation in London’s Westminster Abbey.

The unique blend was “scented with essential oils”and includes extracts of sesame, jasmine and cinnamon, detailed description of Buckingham Palace.

Made from the same ingredients as the oil used at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, it is based on the formula “which has been used for hundreds of years“, they pointed out from Palace.

It is made from olives harvested from two olive groves on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalemin the Ascension Monastery and in the Church of Santa María Magdalena, where Carlos’s grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, is buried.

The olives are pressed on the outskirts of the Palestinian city of Bethlehem, in the West Bank, a territory under Israeli occupation since 1967, details afp.

For the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, head of the Church of England and who will officiate at the coronation, this oil reflects “the royal family’s personal connection to the Holy Land“.

“From ancient kings to the present day, monarchs have been anointed with oil from this holy place,” he said.
