Warner Bros., the studio that also released the “Harry Potter” saga, is now producing new “Lord of the Rings” films.
Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav has announced that new studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have signed a deal to produce more films based on JRR Tolkien’s books.
“I’m pleased to announce that Mike and Pam have signed a deal to shoot multiple Lord of the Rings movies,” said Zaslav.
“’The Lord of the Rings’ is one of the most iconic franchises of all time, and we’re very excited. Stay tuned for more news on this,” he added.
Zaslav gave no further details, but Jackson sent a statement to AFP saying that, like his associates, they were “involved every step of the way”.
There is no information about what the plots or the time of Tolkien’s books will be used as a source for the new movies.
They will be developed by Warner’s subsidiary New Line Cinema, which spearheaded the original Jackson trilogy.
Amazon, the rival studio, released the first season of the television adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in September.
The series, a prequel to the “Lord of the Rings” books, will expand over five seasons at a cost of more than $1 billion.
The first season gave the Amazon Prime platform its biggest opening with 25 million viewers on its first day, but received a lukewarm response from critics.
The original films grossed nearly $3 billion theatrically and won 17 Oscars, including best picture for the latest installment “The Return of the King” (2003).
The productions starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen and Cate Blanchett.
Another trilogy based on “The Hobbit”, also by Tolkien, was also a box office success despite poor critical response.
