Space battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock And Galaxy Express 999 are some of the most recognized works of Leiji Matsumoto, the legendary manga creator who died of heart failure last Monday at the age of 85.

“He mangaka Leiji Matsumoto left on February 13, 2023 for a journey to the Starry Sea. (…) He used to say: ‘We shall meet again in that place where the wheels of time cross’. We believe in those words and we look forward to that day,” his daughter Makiko Matsumoto announced today.

Born in 1938 on the island of Kyushu, Leiji Matsumoto published his first manga at the age of 15: the adventures of a bee. Since then, Matsumoto has not put down his pen and stood out not only in his drawings, but also in the songs he composed for cartoon shows.

“Captain Harlock”, Matsumoto’s most famous manga.

Captain Harlock, a captain turned space pirate after rebelling against the Earth Government, was his most famous character. In 1977, the first series was created, which lasted until 1979, and the chapters were collected in five volumes.

In an interview with the AFP Ten years ago, Matsumoto recounted what it was like to experience the atomic bombs of 1945 that ended World War II.

“The plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima went over my head. The second was for a city near Fukuoka, where I lived. It was bad weather that wiped out Nagasaki,” he recalls.

“That traumatized me, but it was a source of inspiration, just like all the experiences of my childhood (…). Personal experience is essential to the creative mind, even in science fiction,” he said.
