Roald Dahl is an author whose works have entertained children for many years. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Matilda”, “The Witches” – these are just a few of the cult books written by the British author. Recently, the Puffin Books publishing house took care of the changes in the author’s novels. Hundreds of changes were made to the artist’s stories.

The Puffin Books publishing house took care of the changes in Dahl, which hired the so-called sensitive readers. These were the people responsible for getting acquainted with the content of the author’s works and paying attention to fragments that could discriminate against some people. In this way, terms such as “fat”, “tiny” or “unfeminine” disappeared from the story. Instead of these terms, the company publishing the revived versions of the novel uses the phrases “enormous”, “small” and “unworthy”.
What’s more, he also decided to add fragments that had not previously appeared in the books. This change can be seen, for example, in “Matilda”. The title character, apart from “sailing in sailing ships in the old days with Joseph Conrad” and “went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway”, additionally “went to nineteenth-century mansions with Jane Austen”. Some characters, such as the sons of Fantastic Mr. Fox, have changed gender. In the new edition of the novel, their daughters play their role.

All changes made to the iconic books have been approved by The Roald Dahl Story Company, the organization that owns the rights to these works. They justified them with the desire to show the wonderful stories and characters created by the writer to the youngest generations living today.
However, many people do not support inclusive changes. One of them is the British Prime Minister himself, Rishi Sunak. – It is important that literary works, works of belles-lettres, are preserved and not erased.
