Six female scouts formed the most popular female group in the People’s Republic of Poland. Alibabki even recorded a reggae album

Who would have thought that six modest girl scouts would conquer the Polish music scene. “Flower of one night” or “How good to have a neighbor” are some of the many songs performed by them that have become hits. Alibabki quickly made a dizzying career, going down in history as the most popular female band of the times of the People’s Republic of Poland.

Six musically talented girl scouts performed as the “Cykady” band during the 1st National Music Symposium in Przemyśl in 1964, and their performance of “Gypsy Ballad” captivated the crowds. The young girls quickly made a dizzying career, becoming one of the most popular girl bands in Poland.

Alibabki consisted of six young girl scouts. They sang in choirs of the most outstanding Polish artists

At first they performed as the “Cykady” group, but after their stage debut they decided to change their name to Alibabki. The band consisted of six vocally talented girl scouts: Anna Dębicka, Krystyna Grochowska, Sylwia Krajewska, Anna Łytko, Wanda Orlańska and Alina Puk. In 1964, they performed on stage in Opole during the 2nd KFPP with the song “Idzie Świt”, for which they received a distinction. They made their debut on the phonographic market a year later, releasing the first Polish album with reggae music together with the Tajfuny group. Years later, they admitted that when the album was being created, they did not know that such a genre existed.

At first, they sang only scout songs, but over time they began to expand their repertoire with original songs, i.e. “Kwiat Jedno noc”, “How good to have a neighbor”, “Tango flirty – fuck me”, which in the 60s and 70s conquered the charts. — Scout songs with their “bonfire” character began to tickle the mouse, and we wanted to develop – in one of the interviews. In addition to concerts in Poland and abroad, the choirs of the greatest Polish artists supported with their vocals. Their voices can be heard in songs such as Anna Jantar, Maryla Rodowicz and Zbigniew Wodecki.

Two bands, one name. The dispute ended in court

At the time of their debut in the industry, the girls creating Alibabki were still in their senior classes. As the groups developed, they tried to combine learning with frequent rehearsals and recordings. However, the problems began when each of them decided to start a family. The first became pregnant in 1969 and put her career on hold for a while. Shortly afterwards, other artists followed in the footsteps of their friend and in 1972 Alibabki formed substitutes for the original composition of the group.

When the founders wanted to return to the stage, it turned out that there was no place for them in the band, and their replacements began to soar on the reputation they made. Both groups functioned under the same name for some time, which eventually prompted the singers to fight for their good name in court. — It was known who worked on the name, to whom the name was assigned — they motivated entering the legal path. In the end, they managed to win the lawsuit.

They deliberately cut their careers short. The Alibabas are still friends

Officially, Alibabki operated on the music market until 1988, and ended their career with a performance on the stage in Opole. They decided to take this step to give way to new artists and other sounds, and they also wanted to focus on families. “We realized more and more often that we are more audio than video on stage,” admitted Anna Dębicka. All the artists agree that although the adventure with the band gave them many opportunities and opportunities for development, it was not an occupation that allowed them to support their families.

Although they have not performed on stage for years, they remain in friendly relations in private. Although they do not plan to reactivate the group, they occasionally sing in front of the audience. Unfortunately, the performance in the line-up known years ago will no longer be possible, because one of the singers, Wanda Narkiewicz, died in 2020 after a hard fight with brain cancer.
